Bald Eagles Information - Threats
Due to DDT and other pesticides abnormal breeding behavior appeared in the population of Bald Eagles. The eggshells became thin and embryos died. Being carnivores, Bald Eagles accumulate toxic levels of lead and other dangerous agents from waterfowl and fish, which feed on contaminated plankton and plants. By the 1960's there were about 450 nesting pairs left. In many areas the decline of population approached 100%; nesting failures were 55-95%. Excessive hunting can be explained by a bounty, which was in effect in 1917-1945 and in 1949-1953. Bald Eagles were considered to be pests and the government encouraged their killing. Being very powerful creatures, Bald Eagles are very easy to hurt. People who want to watch them disturb these birds when they are nesting. Bald Eagles often abandon their nests with eggs or young because of this. Bald Eagles Information - StatusIn 1978 this species was listed as endangered. Killing Bald Eagles has been illegal since 1940. DDT and environmental damaging pollutants were banned in the early 1970's. On July, 12, the Bald Eagle was reclassified from endangered to threatened in the lower 48 states.Bald Eagles Information - Conservation Links
