The scientific name of Bald Eagles is Haliaeetus leucocephalus, which means "white-headed sea eagle." The Middle English word for "shining white" is "balled," that is how the bald eagle got its name. On June 20, 1782 the image of this species was declared to be the symbol of the USA and adopted for the Great Seal of the state.
The relations of Bald Eagles with humans were rather tense, as the first settlers considered these birds as competitors for fish and game and killed them in large numbers. The population of Bald Eagles has revived and today these birds can be seen in every state except Hawaii.
Bald Eagles Information - Description
Bald Eagles are large and long-winged hawks with white head and tail markings. Young birds are dark-brown. The females of this species are larger than males. The average weight for the adult male bald eagle is 8-9 lbs; females weigh 10-14 lbs. The average length of these birds is between 28 and 38 inches. The wingspread of Bald Eagles is between 66 and 96 inches.
The body structure of this species is specialized for hunting fish and small game. Bald Eagles have bumps on their toes to help them hold onto the fish. During the hunt they spread their wings wide and float. When they see their prey, Bald Eagles drop out of the sky so silently that the prey has no chances of escape.
